Atlantis Dunes 4x4 Recovery Training 13 May 2018

Atlantis Dunes 4x4 Recovery Training 13 May 2018

4x4 Cape Members gathered on Saturday afternoon 13 May 2018 at Gate 2 to Atlantis Dunes for an afternoon of sand driving. With tires deflated to 0.8kpa we entered the dunes which were still wet from the weeks rain but fun to drive.

Driving dunes we learnt to drive straight down in low range in 2nd gear braking just at the bottom to ensure we pushed the sand down to prevent our noses kissing the ground.

We drove in convoy snaking our way accross the dunes till we came to our first recovery excersise.Ford Ranger - which had stopped in an awkward postion at a bottom of a dune and lost all traction.

After much digging and a group discussion on the most appropiate recovery method it was decided to use a winch to recover the Ford. The plan was to winch the Ford 10meters up the slight embankment then disconnect and allow him to reverse and drive out down the dune slope. All jumped into action with gloves on and within 5 minutes the Ford was out and spining sand as it drove away thank full for our recovery skills.

We ended up in Landrover Corner where one of the members managed to remove a tire off the rimm so all hands were on deck to assist with jacking the vehicle up and refitting the tire using a compressor.

No serious damage done and all gathered around the Gas braai for tasty wors rolls cooked by Kevin and Grahame - what a great way to end off an afternoon of fun in the Atlantis Dunes.
